A Grand Canal, half of Chinese history.

The Grand Canal of China consists of three parts: the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Sui-Tang Grand Canal, and the Eastern Zhejiang Canal. It is a great project created in ancient China.

On June 22, 2014, the China Grand Canal project was successfully selected into the World Cultural Heritage List.

For thousands of years, the Grand Canal has connected eight provinces and cities along the route, winding 3,200 kilometers, and connecting five major water systems: Qiantang River, Yangtze River, Huai River, Yellow River, and Hai River. It is the earliest, largest and longest artificial river in the world.

Since modern times, due to social unrest, climate change, economic and social changes, etc., the Grand Canal has been plagued by problems such as river cut-off, water environment pollution, and water ecological damage.

It is people's earnest expectation to restore the grand canal to its former glory.

In 2017, General Secretary Xi Jinping made important instructions on the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt: "The Grand Canal is a precious heritage left to us by our ancestors, and it is a flowing culture. It must be well protected, well inherited, and well utilized."

Since entering the new era, various places along the Grand Canal have launched ecological restoration projects one after another, carrying out targeted renovations on the industrial, urban, and township sections along the canal, continuing to intercept and control pollution, planting aquatic plants, and carrying out multiplication and release. On the basis of the original form, it adheres to both scientific protection and cultural inheritance, and constantly highlights the cultural and historical value and ecological environment value of the Grand Canal.

On April 28, 2022, after 14 days of intensive water replenishment, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal will be open to water for the first time in a century.

With the in-depth implementation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's water replenishment operation, the shipping capacity of the Grand Canal has gradually recovered, and tourists can go boating and transport goods along the river. The once "golden waterway" is once again full of vitality.
