Just over 30 years ago, Sweden suffered a catastrophic fire on board the ship Scandinavian Star.

159 people lost their lives and shortly afterwards it was decided that a special organization for rescue operations at sea would be established.

- My older colleagues who were there at the time have told me about that incident and it can only be described as a nightmare, says Kristoffer Wahter, regional operations leader at Greater Stockholm's fire service and operations leader for the MIRG force which carries out rescue operations at sea.

The force, which now goes by the name MIRG (Maritime Incident Response Group), consists of several specially trained firefighters and officers stationed in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Karlskrona.

With support from the Coast Guard and the Swedish Maritime Administration, they are the ones who are sent out when a ship starts to catch fire.

Then it's a matter of life and death.

See how it's done in the clip above.
