CAN's report is based on self-reported alcohol consumption.

On the whole, alcohol consumption among the Swedish population has decreased by 15 percent since 2004. But the decrease is greatest among the younger population.

People between the ages of 17–29 drink 30 percent less in 2021 compared to 2004. And in the 30–49-year-old age category, you see a 35 percent reduction.

Older people drink more

The only age group that has seen an increase in their drinking is the oldest, those aged 65 and over.

The increase is primarily explained by the fact that women in that age group drink more – their consumption has increased by 46 percent, while men's consumption is up 17 percent.
