In the past five years, the number of Swedish students at Finnish universities has quadrupled.

Last year, 181 Swedes accepted a place to study in Finland, but the number of Swedes who applied to Finnish universities was even higher, 580 people, according to figures from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

That too was a doubling compared to 2016.

The Novia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki tops the list of the most popular universities in Finland, followed by Åbo Akademi, the University of Helsinki and the Swedish School of Economics, Hanken.

All offer studies in Swedish, which is both easier and more useful for Swedes who may want to return home and work in Sweden.

For many Swedes with a Finnish background, the step east is natural.
