• A tram that will serve the south of Marseille will be put into service in 2025.

  • This tramway is an extension of the current T3, from Castellane to La Gaye.

  • It will be financed by Emmanuel Macron's Marseille plan.

When we talk about Marseille in general, this great presidential plan aimed in particular at developing public transport in a city that is lagging behind on the subject, the focus is often on the northern districts, devoid of trams and metro despite its population equivalent to the city of Bordeaux.

This Friday, the president of the metropolis of Aix-Marseille Martine Vassal tried to recall her action for the southern districts of the city within the framework of this plan, with in particular the deployment of the tram to Gaye.

takes stock of this project.

What is the plot?

This tram, voted in 2001 and financed by the billion euros promised by Emmanuel Macron as part of his Marseille plan in large last year, is the extension of the current T3.

It will leave from Place Castellane, in the city center of Marseille, to reach La Gaye.

It will serve the 26th centenary park, the Rouet district, the Sainte-Marguerite Dromel metro stop and the Sainte-Marguerite hospital.

In all, nine tram stops will be created.

A second phase of work involves the construction of a 1.5 kilometer section between La Gaye and La Rouvière.

“We have the Vélodrome stadium and the Palais des Sports in these areas,” explains Martine Vassal.

All those who go there or who live there know the hassle it is to get around and park.

This sector is changing.

There are lots of new buildings.

Head offices come to settle here, like that of the Urssaf.

In a city like Marseille, there is not much space to develop.

Here it is.

It is a sector in the making.

But we don't do things backwards.

We bring the transport first.

What works are planned?

The extension of the tram requires major work, particularly on Place Castellane.

The bulk of the construction will begin on January 10.

“Today, the car occupies 50% of the space in this square, notes the president of the metropolis.

After the works, it will only be 10%.

The rehabilitation project does not, however, provide for cycle paths.

“At first, it will make a lot of changes at once, justifies Martine Vassal.

We will do that in a second time.

"We do not want to delay the project, but at a time when we are fighting against heat islands, we want this project to provide for the revegetation of a very mineral square", recalls the deputy mayor of Marseille in charge mobility, Audrey Gatian.

"The metro is just below," replies Martine Vassal.

And the implementation, when is it?

In a city where the delivery of the last metro extension took place in 2019 no less than five years late, talking about the timetable for a public transport project makes you cough.

For this project, the metropolis is talking about delivery of the first phase in December 2025, at the same time as the implementation of the new fully automated metro on line 2. This implementation will be accompanied by an extension of running times. on metros, trams and major bus lines, which will run from 4:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.
