In a new report, the Equality Authority has interviewed employees in social services, police and schools, among others.

They tell about 143 children and young adults who have been taken out of Sweden against their will in recent years.

The majority, 120 of them, are children.

In most of the cases there is oppression of honor, and in some cases also physical violence.

Known by authorities

The most common reason why the children are taken abroad is that the family tries to escape authority decisions, other reasons include child and forced marriages and so-called educational trips.

- Our survey indicates that this is a serious problem, says Lena Ag.

Common is that the child or young adult had contact with authorities in the majority of cases, and according to the report, more abductions could have been prevented if the authorities had intervened earlier.

Want to see action

It is not known how many children and young people there are in total in the country, as such statistics are not kept nationally.

Now the Equality Authority wants a national reporting system to be investigated, more information to be given in schools, social services' work with risk assessments to be developed and the law on travel bans to be extended, for example to include educational trips.
