After years of protests, a square and a street in the so-called African Quarter in Berlin-Wedding are being renamed.

According to the Mitte district office, the new road signs will be unveiled on Friday in the presence of the ambassadors of Cameroon and Namibia.

Manga-Bell-Platz will change from what used to be Nightingale Square.

It was named in honor of the Duala royal couple, who fought against German colonial rule in Cameroon.

Rudolf Duala Manga Bell was executed in 1914 as a leader of the resistance against the German colonial power.

Lüderitzstraße will be named after Cornelius Fredericks, a resistance fighter against German colonial rule in Namibia.

"Street names are honors and part of the culture of remembrance," said district mayor Stefanie Remlinger (Greens).

It is therefore an important task to erase names from the streets of Berlin that are associated with crimes committed by German colonialism.

According to the decision of the Mitte district assembly, the new street names are intended to honor people who fought for the resistance against colonialism and no longer perpetrators of a colonial regime.

The newly installed street signs will be provided with explanations, according to the information.

The previous namesake Adolf Lüderitz (1834 to 1886) and Gustav Nachtigal (1834 to 1885) are regarded as representatives and pioneers of German colonialism.
