Rinkebyskolan is located in one of the areas hit hardest by gang violence in recent years.

Since the fall of 2019, there have been ten shootings within a 500 meter radius of the school area, SVT's mapping shows.

Drug dealing in the schoolyard

According to headmaster Martin Malmberg, the shootings took place in the evening and not in the absolute vicinity of the school - and therefore have not affected the school's operations.

However, gang crime has crept closer in other ways.

- We had young people who stood on the school grounds and sold drugs, sometimes already in the afternoon when the students went home from their lessons.

Unfortunately, we have also had cases of recruitment, says Martin Malmberg.

Will install security app

Since the school set up high-frequency sound alarms (sounds that are only perceived by young people) and searchlights on the facade, the drug trade has moved on.

Now, like many other schools, they reinforce it with a security app to protect themselves against external threats, such as shootings.

The security measures are only part of the school's work to counter gang violence and new recruitment, says Martin Malmberg.

- Our main weapon is still education.

We know that those who qualify for upper secondary school find other paths.

Our task is to show that those paths exist - that it is possible to achieve one's dreams.
