A copy of the appeal addressed to the Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Maksut Shadayev is available to RT.

As Kuj recalled, deepfake technology, an image synthesis based on artificial intelligence, is now becoming more widespread.

But at the same time, as a study by RTU MIREA showed, the level of awareness of Russians about deepfakes and their potential threats is minimal.

It is noted that only 12% of respondents know the meaning of this term, and in the category of people over 50 this figure is even less - 3%.

At the same time, 86% of respondents are sure that the main tasks of deepfakes are the generation of entertainment content and application in the film industry.

Only 10% of Russians believe that this technology can be used to commit crimes, analysts found.

In addition, experts simulated situations where deepfakes can become a tool for cybercriminals.

For example, attackers can hack facial authentication and gain access to personal information to transfer money or arrange loans.

According to Kuja, deepfake technology should be enshrined in the regulatory framework as a threat to the personal data of Russians.

To do this, it is necessary to make changes to the order of the Ministry of Digital Transformation No. 734 and the register of unacceptable events in the field of cybersecurity, the source said.

In addition, according to him, it is worth including the “Counteraction to deepfakes” module in the special project of the Ministry of Digital Development “CyberHealthy Lifestyle”, develop and approve a graphic mark for marking deepfakes and fix the mandatory marking of content created using this technology.

“This will draw the attention of responsible persons in the public and private spheres to the need to take measures to prevent and counteract direct damage from the activities of attackers using the “deepfake” technology,” the text of the appeal says.

Also, as Kuj emphasized, this will increase awareness and the level of digital hygiene, including among especially vulnerable categories - minors and the elderly.

Earlier it became known that almost half of the inhabitants of Russia this year faced hacking of personal pages on social networks.
