The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today, Monday, that the nuclear disarmament talks between Russia and the United States, which were scheduled to take place this week, have been postponed.

Officials from the two countries were scheduled to meet in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, from November 29 to December 6 to discuss resuming inspections under the New START Treaty to limit the spread of nuclear weapons, which were suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The earlier planned session of the bilateral advisory committee under the New START treaty between the United States and Russia will not take place at the scheduled times. The event has been postponed to a later time," the ministry said.

The ministry gave no reasons, although the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported, citing the US embassy, that the decision was Russia's alone.

Russia's deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, played down expectations of a breakthrough, though the talks were a sign that both sides at least wanted dialogue to continue, at a time when relations are at their lowest point since the Cold War.
