“I am proud that we have opened the homes of Europe to eight million Ukrainians.

I hope that now a solution will be found to give solidarity” also to migrants from the Mediterranean area.

"There is no magic solution. I will work to find a common solution.

The laws are on the table, it's up to us to find the solution

.

We cannot have a sea where refugees continue to lose their lives"

.

This was stated by the president of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, guest of Fabio Fazio on Che tempo che fa, on Rai 3.

“Rescue at sea is mandatory, it is an international law.

All Member States have a moral and legal obligation to rescue ships at sea.

During the height of the crisis in 2015 we had agreed on a code of conduct on NGOs and it has not been used

.

If there is a link between the states coordinating the bailouts then we can find solutions,” Metsola added.

Metsola then, speaking of Italy, made it clear that our country "is in the heart of Europe, Italy needs Europe and Europe needs Italy. We cannot imagine a world that is not like this. This is why the first meetings with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni were encouraging for me. We talked about Ukraine, the Pnrr, aid, flexibility, Italy's role".

Then our thoughts turn to the inhabitants of I

schia where a landslide killed 7 people (5 are still missing):

"First of all, I wanted to send a hug. I know how difficult it is, for the victims, the missing, the people who are still looking ... The European Parliament stands by all the inhabitants".

Another burning issue that Europe has to deal with is the energy crisis.

"On the price cap after months we finally have something on the table but it's not enough

- explains the President of the European Parliament - There are many proposals, the latest is a market corrective mechanism, but the figure of 275 euros for the price cap is too much high. Uncertainty is increasing and we don't need it right now. The European Parliament is working to give citizens solutions to pay their bills".

As for the

war in Ukraine,

Metsola says: “We will negotiate with Russia when Ukraine decides it can be negotiated.

We cannot decide on their territory.

They are the ones who suffer the bombings every day”.

Finally, answering a question

about the World Cup

, Metsola explained: “I received an invitation to go to Qatar but I decided not to go.

In the European Parliament we have concerns about the rule of law and human rights

.

I don't want to mix politics with football, I love football very much, but we need to raise awareness of the problems and challenges they have."
