A Somali police spokesman said that at least eight people were killed and 60 rescued after gunmen from the "al-Shabaab terrorist group" surrounded a hotel.

The Somali security forces said they had ended a bloody siege that lasted for hours after the movement's elements attacked a hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, and police spokesman Sadiq Dodishi told reporters that "the sweeping of the Villa Rosa Hotel has ended."

He added that the gunmen killed eight civilians who were in the hotel, while the security forces succeeded in rescuing about 60 civilians.
