A British BBC reporter covering protests in China was captured by local police and beaten for several hours before being released, the BBC said on the 27th (local time).



According to Reuters and DPA News, the BBC said in a statement from its spokesperson, "BBC reporter Ed Lawrence was handcuffed while covering in Shanghai, China."



The BBC added: "I was held for several hours until I was released. During that time, the police beat Lawrence hand and foot. He was working as an authorized journalist, but this happened."



In the video that spread on YouTube and social media that day, reporter Lawrence fell to the floor with handcuffs behind his back, and four to five public security officers seemed to pull him out.



In another video, reporter Lawrence was caught shouting "Consulate immediately!"



"We have not heard any official explanation or apology from the Chinese authorities," the BBC said.



After his release, the BBC stressed that Chinese officials "claimed that the arrest was made for the safety of reporter Lawrence so that he would not be infected with Corona 19 from the protesters."
