We don't take the recommended calcium...

The report 'Milk as a health vehicle for the population: calcium and its determinants in the health of the Spanish population', prepared by the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN) and the Ibero-American Nutrition Foundation (FINUT), shows that 80% of the Spanish population does not take the necessary amounts of calcium.

In the case of children and adolescents, these figures increase considerably, with which, in short, the panorama is more than worrying.

Benefits of calcium, backed by science

This same report reveals that in recent times numerous organizations without a scientific basis have fueled the idea that the consumption of dairy products increases diseases such as osteoporosis, those related to the heart, obesity, type II diabetes or cancer.

This has contributed to a decrease in the consumption of milk and other dairy products in favor of vegetable drinks, a type of product that cannot be considered a substitute for cow's milk, because they are neither nutritionally comparable nor are they sources of natural calcium.

The scientific evidence is clear on this: the consumption of milk and other dairy products is directly related to higher bone density, a lower risk of fractures in the adult population, and less bone loss in postmenopausal women.

It is also associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and a lower risk of gestational diabetes in pregnant women, lower risk of cerebrovascular disease, prevents distal colorectal, breast and thyroid cancer.

Milk and dairy products: most accessible source in the diet

The main source of calcium that we have access to in civilized countries is milk and its derivatives.

These stand out for their bioavailability, because it is true that there are also other foods rich in calcium such as Norway lobster, although they are not usually present in our diet (mainly due to the price factor) and their regular consumption is not recommended due to their content. fatty and uric acid.

In quality, along with yogurt and Cheddar cheese, milk is the best source of calcium we can take.

Although it is known that milk is a key source of this mineral, there is a tendency to think that calcium can also be obtained from other dietary sources.

And although this is true, it is much more difficult to obtain it in the quantity and with the quality that we find in a simple glass of milk.

A small gesture that can make a big difference

There is a small gesture that can make a big difference when it comes to reaching the recommendations: changing the usual glass of milk for one enriched with calcium, which also incorporates other essential nutrients for the body -Vitamins D, K and phosphorus-.

More than 150,000 people have checked using "El Calciómetro" (https://www.lechepuleva.es/aprende-a-cuidarte/calculadoras-y-test/calcio-que-necesitas), an online calculator developed by the Puleva Institute of Nutrition, that their calcium intake can still improve.

For this reason, now that they are much more aware, more than 60% of them are improving their calcium intake by incorporating foods with a higher content of this mineral in their diet.

"El Calciómetro" has revealed that when calcium-enriched milk is consumed, the recommendations are achieved, with the exception of pregnant women, who remain at 90%, and women over 65 with 91%.

On the other hand, if the milk consumed is classic, only the age range from 4 to 9 years reaches the recommended amount because its consumption is higher than at other vital moments.

And what's more, with the passing of the years, the recommendations are further and further away since calcium intake is decreasing.

Opting for a milk like Puleva VitaCalcio, which contains 50% more natural calcium than other milks in a glass, helps to easily reach the calcium recommendations needed daily in the context of a complete, varied and balanced diet.
