Two experts in the field of space predict that the UAE will be a center for space and astronomy science and technology in the coming years, due to its strong and sustainable space programme.

They told Emirates Today that, within a few years, the UAE was able to achieve huge space achievements, making it the first Arab country in this field, in terms of sending the first Arab astronaut to the International Space Station, and launching the first probe to explore Mars.

Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, member of the Arab Space Federation, confirmed that the UAE has achieved a major development renaissance in the field of space, which has placed it among the leading countries in this sector, pointing out that the state confirms the sustainability of its space program, and that not a year has passed. It is witnessing the completion of an ambitious space project.

He added: «The UAE officially launched in the space sector in 2014, with the establishment of the Emirates Space Agency, and was preceded by the establishment of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center and the Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences. She achieved several space achievements, before the establishment of the Emirates Space Agency, including participation in (Arabsat), (Thuraya), and the launch of (DubaiSat 1), (DubaiSat 2), and others.

Many higher education institutions have also included the teaching of space science within their academic programs, in addition to a master's degree in space science, and directed a number of students to study space engineering, and completed student projects, including mini-satellites. In addition, the UAE was able to send the first Arab astronaut. To the state space station, which is the astronaut Hazza Al-Mansoori, and also has a law in the field of space.

Al Jarwan added: “During the last period, we arrived at Mars, through the Hope Probe, which is considered a historic project in space science not in the UAE but worldwide, because the UAE is considered the fifth country to reach the Red Planet, in addition to the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center.” He is currently launching an ambitious project to the surface of the moon, which is the explorer Rashid, and achievements in this field continue.

He pointed out that the state has strategic goals in the arrival of the human element to Mars and the Moon, before the first centenary of the federation of the state (before 2071), stressing that the ambition of the UAE and leadership does not end at borders in this field, as well as the awareness that accompanied the launch of the UAE space projects created Great interaction with it from various sectors of society, and prompted many investors to pump investments in projects in this sector.

Al Jarwan said that the country, under the directives and vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, and his brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, can continue the path of development and development in the space sector.

For his part, the Director of the University of Sharjah, President of the Arab Federation for Astronomy and Space Sciences, Dr. Hamid Al-Nuaimi, said that the UAE has made great strides in the field of space science and technology, as it began to establish astronomical observatories and space institutions in a clear and direct manner, including the Emirates Space Agency and the Mohammed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Foundation. Rashid Space Academy, and the Sharjah Academy for Space Science and Technology at the University of Sharjah, and in a number of local universities, academic programs in the same field, including the University of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates University, and Khalifa University of Science and Technology.

He added: «The UAE has paid great attention to these sciences in the service of humanity, so that space science and technology has become one of the first national priorities in the country, and a large budget has been allocated for it, and many space projects have been completed that make it unique among the countries of the region, and among the major countries that stormed this field. Including an astronaut, exploring Mars, and intends to participate in the exploration of the moon, and there are future projects on the way to completion, including the exploration of small asteroids between Mars and Jupiter, and the exploration of Venus.

He pointed out that the academic programs are the basis for attracting and educating future youth, especially after the emergence of building, manufacturing and operating small satellites (cubic satellites) within universities, including a satellite that was completed by the students of the University of Sharjah and will be launched near the state of Florida, in addition to that a satellite will be launched ( SharjahSat 1), soon to be manufactured at the Sharjah Academy for Space Science and Technology, is the start of a series of satellites.

On the future of space in the UAE, Al-Nuaimi said: “We must affirm that whoever has no place in space has no place on earth, and therefore the future of the UAE in the field of space will be brilliant in space and astronomy science and technology, which seeks to be Supportive of human development and development, through the achievements it has achieved in this field.

He added that the Arab world will benefit well from the UAE's achievements in the field of space, and thus the UAE will be a center for exporting space science to the region, as well as a center for the use of space, sustainability and economy, in the coming years, because it invests in Emirati and Arab youth, and it is expected that the UAE will send astronauts to the surface of the moon in the future.
