The unrest in Brussels prompted both the police and the city's mayor to advise residents against moving around the area on Sunday afternoon.

"I condemn in the strongest terms what is happening this afternoon.

The police have already intervened decisively.

I therefore ask supporters not to enter the city centre," writes mayor Philippe Close on Twitter.

According to the Belgian public service channel VRT, the rioters were counted in the hundreds.

It is still unclear if anyone was injured in connection with the unrest.
