The race is on: the members of the Socialist Party now have a little less than two months to think about their choice.

Three candidates will indeed run for the head of the PS in January: the outgoing First Secretary Olivier Faure, the mayor of Rouen Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol and the mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin Hélène Geoffroy.

At the end of a national council on Saturday, three orientation texts were tabled and will be submitted to the vote of the members on January 12.

A second vote, on January 19, will decide between the two remaining candidates, before a congress on the 25th in Marseille.

Carole Delga's reviews

At the heart of this 80th congress, the Nupes agreement between insubordinate France, the PS, the ecologists and the communists is being played out, which has made it possible to keep a group of 32 socialist deputies in the Assembly, despite the historic failure in the presidential election of Anne Hidalgo (1.7%).

While the previous congress had seen Olivier Faure (72%) and Hélène Geoffroy (28%) face off, a new fighter entered the arena: Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, with the filing of an orientation text, “Refoundations”.

He is supported by the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo and relatives of the president of the Occitanie region Carole Delga, both clearly opposed to Nupes.

Without officially positioning herself, Carole Delga also criticized, in a forum at the

JDD

, a left "folded in on itself with postures of denial, stunted devices, incantations without a future and disproportionate egos only concerned about their destiny presidential”.

“We are the only novelty, the only way capable of bringing together all the socialists,” Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol also said on Saturday.

For him, “the Nupes deserves neither excess of indignity nor excess of honour.

This political framework is useful, but it is not sufficient or sustainable to win”.

He thus defended a “humanist left, which strengthens and prolongs European construction, which does not confuse radicalism with excess”, in a tackle at LFI.

Elephants with Geoffroy

Hélène Geoffroy, supported by the "elephants" of the PS, like the mayor of Le Mans Stéphane Le Foll, for her part deposited her text "Refound, gather, govern".

The one who has been denouncing the “erasure” of the PS for four years has announced that she would suspend participation in the Nupes, if she won.

Olivier Faure, who proposes the text "To win", for his part denied having lost any autonomy since the agreement with LFI.

Faced with Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol's motion, he however recognized that “the differences were more subtle” but questioned: “Where are we, when we are neither Nupes nor not Nupes?

".

Olivier Faure, who also defends "ecological socialism" and a better distribution of nominations to new generations and women, is however the favorite.

He succeeded in aggregating with him the authors of four general contributions, including the mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland.
