Rescuers working all night

Rescuers working all night in Casamicciola in the hope of finding the 11 missing from the landslide that killed a woman, injured 13, overwhelmed cars and houses, invaded entire neighborhoods with mud.

The strong wind blowing on the island makes operations difficult but the activities go on.

In the port, dawn returns the images of destruction caused by last night's extraordinary event, while in the port you can clearly see the cars that reached the sea after a run of hundreds of meters caused by the wave of mud.

The cleaning operations of the streets continue along via Monte della Misericordia and all the connected crossroads.

The Carabinieri carried out anti-looting checks to protect the now empty homes and continued the operations to clear the more than 150 displaced persons.

Plantedosi, we are still looking under the mud

"There will be time to understand how and why this terrible tragedy occurred. There are people overwhelmed by the mud who are not responding to calls. I would like to underline that all the personnel of the fire brigade present in Ischia intervened immediately and the additional men and equipment was timely, despite the serious difficulties caused by the bad weather which made everything extremely more complicated. In Naples, the Coordination Center chaired by the prefect was activated in Naples to manage the rescue machine. of the fire were followed by the National Operations Center, where I was able to personally acquire updates on the various phases of the emergency".

So Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, in an interview with La Stampa.

"Tragic natural disasters like yesterday's in Casamicciola inevitably re-propose the theme of risk prevention and mitigation. It is essential to commit ourselves to making our territories safe and in this direction we will have to invest taking into account the many fragilities and vulnerabilities", adds the minister.

"The extraordinary professionalism - says the minister - and the incomparable generosity of the Fire Brigade allow us to face the most difficult situations. Clearly the presence of an adequate territorial presence allows us to intervene sooner and better. This is a completely evident general discourse. For as regards Ischia specifically, there were no delays or deficiencies. The rescue machine, as I have already highlighted, was set in motion immediately. All the operational structures coordinated in the best possible way and in a decisive manner. The Fire Brigade represents an Italian excellence to be proud of and in which the Government intends to make the necessary investments. There are resources in the area to deal with similar emergencies but there are never too many".

"As far as the Ministry of the Interior is responsible, it is an island equipped with an adequate contingent of men and means of the Fire Brigade to guarantee intervention operations and in any case, as happens in all other parts of the national territory, on the occasion of exceptional events such as that of last night, the immediate sending of reinforcements from the neighboring areas is guaranteed", adds Piantedosi.
