The 38th National Food Bank Collection began on Friday and will last until Sunday.

During this weekend, volunteers hope to receive as many food donations as possible.

Especially since this year, the number of people in need recorded during the first half of 2022 increased by 200,000 beneficiaries, according to the Food Bank.

Since Friday and until Sunday evening, large collections are organized in stores and supermarkets.

The objective: to help the 2.2 million French people in a situation of food insecurity, in a context of galloping inflation.

For the launch of the 38th national collection of Food Banks, Europe 1 went to the E.Leclerc center in Montparnasse in Paris.

The French in solidarity despite the decline in purchasing power

Posted at the store reception, Brigitte is one of the 15 volunteers present since the store opened, recognizable by their orange vest.

“A little something for the Food Banks?” she asks a customer.

The more the morning passes, the more the donations to be recovered multiply.

"Look, it's happening there, the products are coming! It's pasta I think, it's a great classic pasta. There were also cans," she says.

Despite inflation and the drop in purchasing power, Brigitte is optimistic about fundraising.

The French know how to mobilize in times of crisis, according to her.

"At the time of the Covid, in the midst of a health crisis, we had exceptional collections. We tell ourselves that it's a year, we will also be given a lot. Sometimes there is more solidarity in difficult times", assures- she before continuing.

"There are more and more people anyway, I hope it will be the rush", she smiles at the microphone of Europe 1.

Quentin is one of the first to give, and even if he gets the minimum wage, that doesn't stop him.

"Whatever the income we have, in times of economic crisis, more than ever we must show solidarity with the most deprived", he supports.

In two hours, a dozen boxes have already been filled.

The objective of the Food Banks: collect 20 million meals in three days.
