The quake struck in the western part of Java shortly after noon on Monday, local time.

The city of Cianjur was worst hit where the magnitude was measured at 5.6.

The death toll has risen significantly in batches, and around 150 people are still missing.

Still searching

According to Indonesia's National Emergency Management Agency, the focus is still on the search for missing persons and the evacuation of victims.

Many injured people are said to have had their arms and legs broken, or suffered other injuries, when buildings collapsed.

Many of the dead are also said to be children and young people, as earthquakes and landslides caused schools to collapse.

Indonesia

Even in the capital Jakarta, which is about ten kilometers from Cianjur, residents could feel the tremor and the city's high-rises swayed.

The President visited Cianjur

The country's president, Joko Widodo, was in Cianjur on Tuesday and announced that national authorities would offer their support.

- On behalf of myself and my government, I want to express my deepest condolences, said Widodo, TT reports.

Indonesia lies along the so-called Ring of Fire, with fault lines that surround the Pacific Ocean and cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunami waves.

Earlier this year, at least 25 people died in an earthquake in western Sumatra, where the magnitude was measured at 6.2.
