Over the weekend, the Turkish military launched airstrikes against several Kurdish targets.

The air offensive comes after Turkey's government accused Kurdish organizations of being behind the bombing that was carried out in Istanbul on November 13.

According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the military action will continue.

- For a few days now, we have had a hold on the terrorists with planes, cannons and drones.

With God's help we will get rid of them all, he said at a ceremony on Tuesday.

Russia and the US "get along"

Both the United States and Russia are deeply involved in the conflict-affected Syria in various ways.

The US has long supported Kurdish groups in the war against the extremist Islamists of IS, and Russia, for its part, supports the Assad regime in the country's bloody civil war.

- But Erdogan has also said that we do not need anyone's approval for a ground offensive, says SVT's Turkey correspondent Tomas Thorén.
