▲ UN Security Council meeting discussing North Korea's ICBM

The UN Security Council met on the 21st local time on the issue of North Korea's recent intercontinental ballistic missile and ICBM launch, but the discussion ended without tangible results.

At the Security Council meeting held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York this morning, the United States, Western countries, South Korea, and Japan strongly condemned North Korea's repeated ballistic missile provocations and urged a united official response at the Security Council level.

However, China and Russia ran parallel lines as they reaffirmed their existing position that North Korea's armed provocations were 'blame' for the United States.

However, attention is focused on the possibility of adopting it in the future, as the United States announced that it would propose a statement condemning North Korea's ICBM launch.

At the meeting, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said, "The United States will propose a chairman's statement." We urged you to join us.”

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield explained that although strong measures such as a resolution on additional sanctions against North Korea were needed, the level of response was lowered in consideration of China and Russia.

South Korean Ambassador Hwang Joon-guk and Japanese Ambassador Kimihiro Ishikane also attended as interested parties and expressed similar views.

Ambassador Hwang said that the Security Council was convened in May about North Korea's ICBM test launch, but after mentioning the fact that it failed to impose additional sanctions, "North Korea has become much more aggressive and dangerous."

As no tangible conclusions were drawn from this Security Council meeting, ambassadors from 14 countries, including South Korea, the United States and Japan, issued an outside joint statement condemning North Korea's ballistic missile provocations and calling for denuclearization immediately after the meeting.
