Even after the end of the pandemic,

the growth of digital payments continues

in Italy , both online and with cards, with a leap in contactless payments.

This is what emerges from the data processed by the ABI during a seminar on the subject.

According to new data

, payments rose by 22% in the first half of the

year after the 24% increase in 2021.

Contactless cards leaped by 49%

and

smartphones and bracelets by as much as 139%

Cash alternative

Although our country is still in the low range at the European level in the alternative to cash, the increase in the last two years is higher than the EU average.

In 2021, underlines the Abi,

our country was third from bottom in Europe for the number of operations per capita with electronic payment instruments

, before Bulgaria and Romania: 168 operations, against the average of 333 operations in the euro area, the goal.

A delay due not only to tax issues but also to "

habits and cultural aspects

" of customers.

However, there is a trend reversal due to Covid and measures such as cashback.

The lower use "

does not depend on the differences in the diffusion of cards or the number of pos

" explains the ABI, according to which in our country there are 1.5 cards per capita against the euro average of 1.9 and 70 pos per thousand inhabitants against an average of 39.

Digital security

The greater use of digital payments and home banking is also leading banks to invest more and more in security.

Spending in the sector has exceeded

350 million euros

and 91% of institutions expect an increase.

However, the ABI underlines how

anomalous transactions fell by 40%

in 2022 even if the value remains higher than in the pre-pandemic period.
