“
People should consider leaving the country to reduce demand on the electricity grid.
If only three or four months
” said Maxim Timchenko, the director of Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK, writes our special correspondent in Ukraine,
Clea Broadhurst
.
This company provides more than a quarter of Ukraine's electricity today and the system becomes less reliable with each Russian attack.
At the moment, the damage is such that DTEK is unable to produce enough electricity to meet the current needs of the millions of people affected.
Long periods without electricity?
Until now, outages have generally been limited to a few hours, but increased Russian attacks since early October could lead to longer periods without power.
Not to mention that repairing
damaged infrastructure
also becomes more difficult.
Denys Chmygal, the Ukrainian Prime Minister, called for “
additional support
” from the European Union to deal with this situation, in particular “
for the purchase of additional volumes of gas
”.
Limit the use of household appliances
The government has also urged people to limit the use of household appliances such as ovens and washing machines, to turn off lights when possible.
Any means of reducing consumption - including leaving the country - must be seen as helping Ukraine to win the war against Russia.
