The U.S. Justice Department has appointed a highly independent special counsel to expedite an investigation into classified documents found at the home of former President Trump.

Mr. Trump has announced his candidacy for the presidential election two years later, and the focus is on whether the truth will be revealed.

U.S. Attorney General Garland held a press conference on the 18th, saying that when the FBI = Federal Bureau of Investigation searched the home of former President Trump in August, several confidential documents, including top secrets, were found. He announced that he had appointed a special counsel to lead an investigation into allegations of illegal interference in the transition of power after the presidential election.

The appointment was Jack Smith, who was the chief prosecutor of a special tribunal set up in The Hague, the Netherlands, to try war crimes during the Kosovo conflict in the former Yugoslavia in the late 1990s.

A special counsel is a highly independent prosecutor appointed by the Attorney General or Congress for the purpose of avoiding conflicts of interest. "The appointment of a special prosecutor is in the public interest, as President Biden is also willing to do so."
