According to the official WeChat news of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Funeral Committee of Academician Wang Wencai of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences released the "Obituary of Academician Wang Wencai" on the 16th. Wang Wencai, a researcher at the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences and a member of the China Democratic League, died in Beijing at 15:13 on November 16, 2022 at the age of 96.

  Academician Wang Wencai was born in Yexian County, Shandong Province (now Laizhou City, Shandong Province). He was born in Jinan, Shandong Province on June 5, 1926. He graduated from the Biology Department of Beijing Normal University in August 1949 and stayed there as a teacher. In March 1950, he was transferred to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Plant Taxonomy. Research Institute (now the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences), was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993.

Academician Wang Wencai has won many honors and awards, including the 1987 National Natural Science First Prize, the 1996 Qiushi Science and Technology Foundation Biology Award, the 1997 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award, and the 2009 National Natural Science First Prize Awards and many more.

  Academician Wang Wencai is one of the leaders in the field of plant taxonomy and phytogeography in my country, and is also a world-renowned plant taxonomist.

He carried out extensive and in-depth research on the flora of China, published 28 new genera and about 1,370 new species, and proposed 16 discontinuously distributed samples and 3 migration routes of the flora of East Asia. A master of taxonomic research on Caricaceae, Urticaceae and other taxa.

Academician Wang Wencai took the lead in organizing the compilation and research of "Illustrated Book of Higher Plants of China", and is also one of the main contributors to "Flora of China".
