One million rubles donated to “Mothers-heroines”

Nostalgic for the Soviet era, Vladimir Putin restored the title of “Mother-heroine” last August.

This title was first awarded in the USSR in October 1944 and was intended to encourage birth rates, when millions of Soviets had been killed in World War II.

While Russia has been facing a new demographic crisis for years, which has worsened with the Covid-19 pandemic and the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has decided to restore this title by ordering the payment of one million rubles (approximately 16,200 euros) to women honored as “Mother-heroines”.

According to preliminary results of the population census published by the Russian Statistical Agency (Rosstat), about 147 million people lived in Russia in October-November 2021, one million less than in 1992, after the fall of the USSR.
