Turkey has reappointed an ambassador to Israel after a four-year hiatus.

The experienced diplomat Sakir Ozkan Torunlar was appointed to the post by presidential decree, Turkish media reported on Saturday.

It is the latest step in a series of attempts to normalize relations between the two countries.

Torunlar was Consul General in Jerusalem from 2010 to 2014.

Ankara withdrew its ambassador to Israel in May 2018 and expelled the Israeli envoy from Turkey.

Ankara cited the death of dozens of Palestinian demonstrators in clashes with the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip as the reason.

Israel then expelled the Turkish consul in Jerusalem.

In August of this year, after several months of rapprochement, Israel and Turkey announced the full resumption of diplomatic relations and, with it, the return of their ambassadors.

Israel appointed its new ambassador to Ankara in September.

Relations between Israel and Turkey suffered not least from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's sharp criticism of then Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, after Netanyahu's election victory in early November, Erdogan sent a letter of congratulations.
