Valencia airport in Spain was shut down for several hours on Saturday following heavy thunderstorms, according to the Spanish air traffic control body Enaire and the company that manages the airport.

"Violent thunderstorms at Valencia airport have forced the suspension of all landings and take-offs," Enaire tweeted early in the day on Saturday.

Air traffic was interrupted from around 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to AENA, the company that manages the airport.

Ten flights were redirected to other airports and 28 were canceled, according to Valencia Airport.

The take-off and landing strip there was "no longer operational after being struck by lightning", according to a tweet from AENA.

The storm had hit the eastern coast of this region on Friday evening with strong winds and torrential rains which intensified early Saturday morning.

The storm also affected rail traffic in the Valencia region, according to ADIF, the manager of the Spanish rail network, as well as several metro lines, according to the Valencian government.
