Kwon Seong-dong, a member of the People's Power, who was indicted on charges of corruption in the recruitment of Kangwon Land and was acquitted, received criminal compensation.



The Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Settlement Division 51 (Chief Judge Koh Pension) announced today (11th) in the Official Gazette that it has decided to pay 5.65 million won in criminal compensation to Rep. Kwon, who was found not guilty by the Supreme Court in February this year.



Criminal compensation is a system in which the state compensates for expenses incurred in criminal litigation if a person is found not guilty.



Rep. Kwon was indicted in 2018 on charges of (obstructing business) for putting pressure on the HR team and others to hire 11 interns, including assistants, from November 2012 to April of the following year during the public selection process for Kangwon Land trainees.



Heung-jib Choi, former president of Kangwon Land, accused him of hiring his own secretary as an experienced employee in return for a request for audit by the Board of Audit and Inspection (third-party bribery). The charge of exerting pressure on officials of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (abuse of power) was also applied.



However, the court acquitted the first to third trial, saying that it is difficult to believe that the allegations have been proven in light of the credibility of the statements.



The bereaved family of the late Attorney Park Se-kyung, who was sentenced to probation for violating the martial law during the military regime, but was acquitted in a retrial after 41 years, also received criminal compensation.



The Seoul Central District Court has issued a criminal compensation order to pay 43.46 million won to Park's son, and the decision has recently been confirmed.



Attorney Park was indicted that year for violating the martial law by holding an illegal assembly at the home of former President Kim Dae-jung in Donggyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul on May 1, 1980, and was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of probation.



In 2021, 41 years later, the prosecution requested a retrial, and the court acquitted him.



The Seoul Central District Court announced that it would pay 5.2 million won in criminal compensation to reporter Lee Sang-ho of the accusation news, who was indicted for defaming the reputation of the late singer Kim Gwang-seok's wife, Seo Hae-soon.
