Cleaning and closing 80 abandoned buildings in Sharjah since the beginning of the year

Since the beginning of the year, Sharjah City Municipality has organized about 700 inspection visits to abandoned houses to determine their condition and take the necessary measures regarding them, as 40 abandoned buildings were demolished and 80 buildings were cleaned, closed and secured.



The purpose of cleaning abandoned buildings is to prevent the spread of weeds or any pests harmful to public health, to prevent their use by unknown persons, and to prevent any other negative practices or behaviors.



The Sharjah Municipality clarified that the abandoned buildings distort the civilized and aesthetic appearance of the city, so it works continuously to educate the owners of the importance of maintaining the structural condition of any building and not leaving it neglected without maintenance. Organizing periodic inspection visits to monitor abandoned buildings and taking the necessary administrative and legal measures.



Engineer Yaqoub Al-Zarouni, Director of the Engineering and Building Control Department, confirmed that there are security and health risks that result from abandoned buildings, including their transformation into random dwellings and open sites for negative practices of all kinds, tampering with, and exposing their contents to theft and the possibility of burning them, as well as children entering to play with them, which poses a danger to them as they are likely to fall. And the lack of any of the safety factors, as it results in many health damages, such as turning them into dump sites and turning them into warehouses for random storage, and the spread of odors and pests.



He added that the municipality monitors and controls abandoned and dilapidated buildings, inspects them, studies their conditions, and decides what is necessary in their regard.



Al-Zarouni noted that there are procedures to be taken in dealing with abandoned buildings, where an integrated committee is formed by the relevant departments and authorities to implement the required and take the necessary action, each according to its competence, then monitor the abandoned buildings, clean them and close them if the condition of the building is good, and if it is not, an announcement is made about the abandoned buildings. Buildings in the Official Gazette, then completing the administrative and legal procedures.



He stressed that the municipality is working in cooperation with the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures against the abandoned buildings, speed up the pace of work, simplify the procedures and finish them as quickly as required: the General Command of Sharjah Police, the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, the Real Estate Registration Department, the Planning and Survey Department and the Public Prosecution, in order to complete the demolition procedures in accordance with the regulations and laws In force and based on mutual cooperation, each according to its specialization.
