“We strongly condemn the ongoing bacchanalia in Latvia to destroy the Soviet memorial heritage,” Zakharova said in a comment on the website of the Foreign Ministry.

She noted that veterans had been gathering at the Friendship Mound memorial for years.

According to her, the dismantling of Soviet monuments is taking place contrary to Latvia's international and bilateral obligations.

Earlier, the Russian embassy expressed deep indignation at the demolition of memorials in Daugavpils and on the "Mound of Friendship" in Latvia and called this decision "cave Russophobia."
