Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Wednesday that US guarantees would protect the maritime border agreement with Israel if former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wins a majority in the elections.

"The agreement is now in the custody of the United Nations, and Lebanon, for its part, is committed to this agreement, which was deposited with the United Nations, and we do not believe that anyone can remove an iota of this issue," Mikati told Reuters by phone.

Netanyahu threatened to "neutralize" the deal, which went into effect last week after years of indirect talks brokered by the United States that led to the demarcation of the maritime border between Lebanon and Israel.

The preliminary counting results in the Israeli elections today showed that Netanyahu's camp obtained a clear majority in the Knesset (parliament) with 67 seats.
