The death toll increases as the hours pass.

At least 137 people died Sunday evening in India in the collapse of a bridge which spanned a river in the state of Gujarat, in the west of the country.

Authorities estimated that 500 people, including women and children, were celebrating a religious holiday on and around the bridge when the cables supporting it gave way shortly after dark.

The state government appointed a team of five investigators to determine the causes of the bridge collapse.

Nine people, all associated with a company that maintained the bridge in Morbi, are being investigated for manslaughter.

The structure had just been renovated

Sandeepsinh Jhala, head of the municipality of Morbi, indicated that no certificate of conformity had been issued before the reopening to the public, last Wednesday, of this bridge which had just been renovated.
