The "virginity surgeries" are not something that the clinics openly advertise.

But several doctors say yes to the procedure when SVT Nyheter's 25-year-old reporter from Lebanon calls and pretends to be a disgraced woman who was forced into marriage by her family.

5 out of 20 clinics examined by SVT Nyheter offer a procedure to "restore virginity".

The maids of honor and the virginity claim

The requirement to bleed on the wedding night, to show one's innocence, is central to those who wish to maintain standards of honor.

If a girl openly challenges or defies the prevailing norm, she is considered a disgrace to the entire family and risks physical punishment in order for the family to regain what is perceived as lost honor.

SVT Nyheter has previously examined the violence against the girls who live in honor-related violence or oppression.

How many young people live with so-called virginity claims is not known, but last summer a survey in Botkyrka showed that every third girl was expected to wait to have sex until she married.

Happening in secret

SVT Nyheter's investigation shows that some activities take place in secret, where tips about helpful doctors go by word of mouth.

A doctor at Vårby Care in Stockholm offers to perform an operation for SEK 10,000.

When the time comes, the doctor hastily cancels the visit and instead gives a tip:

- You get to put fresh chicken liver in his vagina to make sure that blood flows before he sleeps with you.

A week or so later, she returns and offers the operation again.

When SVT Nyheter later confronts the doctor, she agrees that she contributes to maintaining the oppression of honor - but that she does it to save girls' future.

- You mean that I should call the police instead?

It can make it worse for the girl because then the family might kill her.

The offer: to "become a virgin again"

Although it is a myth that there is a hymen that ruptures at first intercourse, even large established clinics offer to "repair the hymen".

The Devita beauty clinic says yes during the round-up, but just before the consultation they withdraw the offer, according to the nurse, the reason is "that the surgeon does not want to end up in the media".

At Akademikliniken, which describes itself as a leader in plastic surgery in the Nordics, the procedure costs SEK 30,000.

It is also the only clinic that wants to be interviewed openly about the matter.

- Where else should these women turn?

They are desperate, they would only travel abroad if it were banned in Sweden, says plastic surgeon Riikka Veltheim at the Academy Clinic in Stockholm.

What do you say to those who think you're making money off honor suppression?

- I earn almost nothing, it is a microscopic part of the entire group's finances and an extremely, extremely small part of my personal finances, says Riikka Veltheim.

"Central part of the oppression of honor"

Today, it is not illegal to perform the operations if the patient is over 18 years of age.

But the new government wants to criminalize "virginity operations" as well as virginity certificates - and checks.

Madelene Larsson, expert on honor violence at the Equality Agency believes that these operations contribute to consolidating a dangerous culture of honor.

- In addition to that, it is also deeply unethical that healthcare providers in Sweden not only perform interventions that go beyond proven experience and science, but also profit financially from this very vulnerable target group, says Madelene Larsson.
