Recently, during his trip to Yan'an, General Secretary Xi Jinping made a special trip to a school - Yan'an Middle School.

What kind of school is this?

How has it changed over the years?

In this campus, what are the constant persistence and pursuit?

This issue of "Learning from the past, learning the history with the general secretary" will take you into Yan'an Middle School.

The first middle school founded by the Communist Party of China

In August 1938, at the historical moment of national disaster and national peril, in order to accumulate strength for the Anti-Japanese War and reserve talents for the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the predecessor of Yan’an Middle School, the Middle School in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, was born in the smoke of war.

The principal, Cai Ziwei, said at the opening ceremony, "We need to make the middle schools in the border areas a true model of national defense education."

Among the students of that year were young people from the border area, children of martyrs, red little devils who had gone through the Long March, young officials of border area agencies, and poor children from the local area in northern Shaanxi.

The school does not set a threshold for students, and they enroll at any time. They are divided into different classes according to their educational level. The schooling system varies from one year to three years.

Without classrooms and dormitories, students dig caves; without desks and chairs, wooden boards are used instead; without textbooks, the school compiles and prints by itself.

Teacher Jia Zhi, who once taught in Yan'an Middle School, recalled: "The scorching sun was scorching hot, and the children were sitting in front of the cave door with wooden boards on their knees, which were the desks; in the cold winter and the twelfth lunar month, the north wind was blowing against the windows with snowflakes in between, and they were so angry. Taking notes with a pen made of scrap shells in hand."

During those hard and bright years, learning was only for saving and serving the country, as sung in the song "Song of the Middle School in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region": "We study, study, in order to liberate the semi-colonial and semi-feudal motherland! In order to build freedom and happiness new world!"

As the first middle school founded by the Communist Party of China, over the past 80 years, from the earliest middle school in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border area to today's Yan'an Middle School, the school has changed its name 15 times, relocated its site 14 times, and has gone through many turns, but the school has never been interrupted. The red gene is in the same line.

The history of Yan'an Middle School is a microcosm of the development history of secondary education in China under the leadership of the Communist Party of my country.

"Serving the Revolutionary War and the Construction of the Border Region"

At the beginning of its establishment, Yan'an Middle School insisted that education should serve the people, the revolutionary war, and the border area construction.

In June 1946, the Kuomintang tore up the armistice agreement, and the civil war was about to break out.

The school implements war preparation education, generally implements a militarized establishment, strengthens military training, and adds military knowledge, first aid knowledge, current affairs and politics, and anti-rape education.

In March 1947, Hu Zongnan invaded Yan'an. The school was divided into two parts. Most of the teachers and students formed the Fourth Rear Hospital of the Northwest Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

The rest of the teachers and students still maintain the secondary school system, work and study at the same time, and follow the Party Central Committee and the border area government to fight in northern Shaanxi.

The school also encourages students to go out of the classroom, carry out winter school education, literacy for the masses, carry out literary and artistic propaganda, and activate the cultural life of the border area.

Guan Xiangsheng, a former deputy secretary-general of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee of the Communist Party of China, recalled his experience as a teacher of Dongxue in Jingbian County at the end of 1938: "The villagers see me as a 'Mr. When I came to tutor the students, the villagers would bring out the food that they were usually reluctant to eat, and served hot meals to fill me up.”

By combining education with revolutionary war and productive labor, Yan'an Middle School has accumulated rich experience in running schools for secondary education, and provided reference for the formulation of China's educational policy after the founding of the People's Republic of my country and the development of secondary education in New China.

The red gene is passed down from generation to generation

For more than 80 years, Yan'an Middle School has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for the party and the country, and made contributions to the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the victory of the War of Liberation, the founding of New China and the national economic construction.

Among the first batch of 21 Chinese students studying in the Soviet Union, 16 are students of Yan'an Middle School.

Peng Shilu, my country's first nuclear submarine chief designer, Kou Weidong, the first Ph.D. recipient in New China's communications discipline, and Li Dong, chief designer of the Long March 5 launch vehicle, all graduated from Yan'an Middle School.

Walking into today's Yan'an Middle School, the small cave has become a clean and bright modern school building, and the number of students has increased from more than 200 to more than 5,000.

Today, the slogan "Running a school with the spirit of Yan'an and educating people" stands prominently on the campus.

The "School Song of the Middle School in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region" still reverberates under the Baota Mountain and beside the Yanhe River.

Yan'an Middle School has extended the school song of the border area middle school to today's school song, showing the glorious tradition and remembering the glorious years.

In recent years, Yan'an Middle School has adhered to the concept of "running schools and educating people with the spirit of Yan'an". By singing red songs, performing red plots, telling red stories, and reciting red poems, it has taught students to inherit the red gene, strengthen their ideals and beliefs, and strengthen their mission. .

During this visit to Yan'an Middle School, General Secretary Xi Jinping read the history of the school, visited the restaurant, and entered the classroom. He hoped that Yan'an Middle School would carry forward the revolutionary tradition, cultivate new talents of the times, and encouraged the students to set up lofty ideals from childhood to ensure that the red gene is passed on from generation to generation. The high expectations of the famous historical schools and children.
