• Catalonia The Generalitat despises the match of the Spanish team in Barcelona

Barcelona City Council is not with the selection.

Mayor Ada Colau closed any door so that Spain's matches in the Qatar World Cup, which starts in a few weeks, can be projected in public spaces in the city.

And the reason is political, although it has nothing to do with a rejection of 'la Roja' as was experienced in the most intense years of the independence process.

The Consistory argued that Qatar "is a dictatorship that violates Human Rights" for not allowing live sports to be followed on a big screen

In the municipal plenary session in October, the Ciudadanos group asked the City Council to provide spaces to follow the matches of the Spanish team in the final phase of the World Cup.

However, Colau rejected the proposal since he does not want to "make public resources or public space available to follow a World Cup that takes place in a dictatorship."

"It is a mistake to organize a world sporting event, which has to promote the values of democracy, peace and human rights, in a dictatorship," said the mayor.

In addition, he accused FIFA of being "an accomplice of a dictatorship like that of Qatar."

Despite this, Colau recalled that on other occasions the Consistory has given municipal spaces to follow the national team's football matches on the big screen.

The Socialists, Colau's partners in the municipal government, also rejected the screening of matches and attacked FIFA.

The first deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni, made ugly the words of the FIFA president about this competition in which he assured that the competition will allow Qatar to "get rid of prejudices".

"What the FIFA president calls prejudice is a violation of human rights, persecution of the LGTBI community and discrimination against women. The World Cup cannot be an excuse to whitewash the dictatorship," Collboni said on social media.
