In October, Istat estimates a decline in the consumer confidence

climate index

from 94.8 to 90.1: it shows a negative trend for the second consecutive month and reaches its lowest level since May 2013.

The negative opinions on the possibility of saving in the future and those on the opportunity to buy durable goods

, followed by deteriorating opinions on both the personal economic situation and that of the country,

contributed to the sharp decline in the index .

The composite index

of business confidence

also fell, which decreased for the fourth consecutive month, going from 105.1 to 104.5: after the marked growth recorded in 2021, the index underwent a downsizing in January 2022 entering a period of stasis until June.

A new downturn has begun since July 2022.

The climate of consumer confidence is elaborated on the basis of nine questions deemed most suitable for assessing the

optimism / pessimism of consumers

(namely: judgments and expectations on the economic situation in Italy; expectations on unemployment; judgments and expectations on the economic situation of the family; current opportunities and future possibilities of saving; opportunities to purchase durable goods; judgments on the family budget).
