Former Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare of the Liberal Democratic Party, Shigeyuki Goto, was appointed tonight to succeed former Minister for Economic Revitalization Yamagiwa, who resigned over his ties to the former Unification Church.

Yamagiwa, whose ties to the former Unification Church have been exposed one after another, resigned last night as minister in charge of economic revitalization, saying he did not want to affect parliamentary deliberations.

In response, Prime Minister Kishida summoned Shigeyuki Goto, former Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare of the Liberal Democratic Party, to the Prime Minister's official residence on the morning of the 25th and conveyed his intention to appoint Mr. Yamagiwa's successor.

Prime Minister Kishida told reporters, "The supplementary budget and the compilation of economic measures are in front of us. We have three points: abundant political experience, high ability to explain, and passion for economic and social change. I decided to ask for it as an immediate fighting force," he said.

On the other hand, in appointing Mr. Goto, he indicated that the Kishida Cabinet's policy of severing the relationship with the former Unification Church will remain unchanged if it is confirmed that he has a connection with the former Unification Church.

Goto told reporters, "Since there are a mountain of very important issues such as economic measures, countermeasures against soaring prices, the supplementary budget that will follow, and the response to the new corona and 'new capitalism,' I would like to work on it," he said.

He then explained that he had never had a relationship with the former Unification Church, and indicated that he would comply with the Cabinet's policy.

Mr. Goto will attend the certification ceremony at the Imperial Palace tonight, and will hold a press conference after this.
