Far-right coup plotters had prepared a coup for the day of reflection of the general elections of October 28, 1982, the first that the

PSOE

won , as revealed this Sunday by former Defense Minister

Narcís Serra.

Serra, in an act organized by the

PSC

to commemorate the forty years since that victory, explained that, being already mayor of

Barcelona

, early in the morning of October 10 the then socialist candidate for the Presidency of the Government,

Felipe Gonzalez.

González

asked

Serra

to travel urgently to

Madrid

, where they both met with the then defense minister,

Alberto Oliart.

The UCD minister explained to them that he had prepared a coup for October 27, a day of reflection.

That information led

González

to tell

Serra

"you have to accept" to be the new Defense Minister, a position that, knowing the possibilities of being the next Prime Minister, he had already offered him in July 1982.

In that month,

Serra

rejected the offer because he believed that he was more useful as mayor of

Barcelona

than as minister, a position he finally held after the victory of the PSOE on October 28 with a request from González: "No more blows."
