It is also clear that the party leader of the coalition party Lega, Matteo Salvini, will become infrastructure minister.

According to tradition in Italy, the president does not ask the prime minister to form a government until he has held formal talks with all parties in parliament - so he has now done so.

- Giorgia Meloni has accepted the mandate and has presented her list of ministers, says Ugo Zampetti, spokesperson for President Sergio Matarella, according to Reuters.

Swear in on Saturday

It was at the end of September that the Brothers of Italy won the Italian parliamentary election with 26 percent of the vote.

The coalition also includes Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party and Lega, led by Matteo Salvini.

The new government will be formally sworn in on Saturday.
