news of the day

The Russian authorities assured this Friday that a "column of civilians" had suffered a Ukrainian bombardment, on the night of Thursday to Friday, as it crossed the Dnieper river which borders Kherson.

Major evacuations of civilians have taken place in recent days in this city in southern Ukraine, under Russian occupation but which kyiv is close to taking back.

"This night bombardment would have killed four people, including two journalists who were with the population", and 13 other people injured, said in a statement, the Russian Investigation Committee, in charge of the main criminal investigations.

No details have been given to date on the identity of the journalists killed, AFP said.

The Ukrainian army quickly denied on Friday that it had targeted civilians: "We are not touching essential infrastructure, we are not touching peaceful settlements and the local population", the spokeswoman for the Southern Command of the Ukraine told Ukrainian television. army, Natalia Goumenyuk.

sentence of the day

“There is no need to expect any insight or political wisdom from anyone in the collective West, including Britain”

This is how Dmitri Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, reacts this Friday to the resignation, the day before in the United Kingdom, of Liz Truss from the post of Prime Minister.

Russia therefore has little hope that the future head of the British government, who must be appointed by October 28, will be more favorable to it in the war in Ukraine.

The day before, Russian diplomacy had already mocked the announcement of the resignation of Liz Truss, after only six weeks in power punctuated by an avalanche of crises.

On the social network Telegram, the spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, spoke in particular of an "embarrassing" situation for the United Kingdom.

The number of the day

1.5 billion… This is, in euros, what the European Union plans to provide, per month, to Ukraine in 2023. That is therefore “an overall figure of 18 billion for next year (…), a predictable, stable and reliable revenue stream,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told a press conference in Brussels on Friday.

"It is important to send a signal to Ukraine," said the head of the European executive who instructed the finance ministers of the 27 to develop the appropriate mechanism to provide this aid.

While the Ukrainian economy is devastated by eight months of Russian offensive, kyiv estimates the government's monthly financing needs at between three and four billion euros.

These three to four billion should be financed by the EU, the Americans and the international financial institutions, specified Ursula von der Leyen.

Ukraine needs our support for as long as it takes, starting with the needs for next year.

We discussed how to meet Ukraine's increasing needs, and tasked finance ministers to develop the appropriate mechanism.#EUCO

The trend of the day

“Kherson region: 88 localities recaptured”… This is the message posted this Friday, on Telegram, by an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, Kyrylo Tymoshenko.

kyiv thus claims, this Friday, new advances in this strategic region of Kherson, a city in southern Ukraine.

A previous assessment, on October 13, already reported 75 towns and villages taken back from the Russians.

Kherson is the first major city to be taken by Russian forces at the start of their offensive.

Threatened to lose it, Moscow wants to make a "fortress" of it and is currently evacuating the civilian population.
