A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 19 years in prison on Wednesday by the criminal court of Rouen (Seine-Maritime).

He was prosecuted for "intentional violence resulting in death" after the death of his companion in Le Havre, in March 2020;

The victim had been violently beaten and left for dead, on his bed.

She had succumbed to her injuries a few hours later, the doctors noting a brain death.

The 30-year-old had already been violent towards his spouse.

The day before the tragedy, he had accompanied her to the hospital for the removal of braces on a hand that he himself had broken a few weeks earlier.

Drunk at the time

The accused then joined a friend with whom he had been drinking heavily.

Very drunk, he went to his partner's home in the evening and beat her with his fists, kicks and sticks.

During his trial, the man expressed his remorse to the relatives of the victim;
