A policeman was sentenced in early October to a two-year suspended prison sentence by the Assizes of the Marne for having knocked out a Corsican supporter with his truncheon.

This tragedy took place during scuffles after the Reims-Bastia match in 2016. The official decided to appeal his conviction, his lawyer said on Monday.

“Some consider that a two-year suspended sentence is a gift.

We consider that it is not justified, ”said Me Nicolas Brazy to AFP, confirming information from France Bleu Champagne-Ardenne.

He asserts that his client “must be acquitted”.

After a match won by Bastia in Reims on February 13, 2016, the police officer used his telescopic baton against Maxime Beux, a Bastia supporter, in downtown Reims, resulting in the loss of his left eye. .

The Assize Court had sentenced him in early October to a two-year suspended prison sentence, judging that the use of his weapon was neither "absolutely necessary" nor "proportionate".

Late medical treatment

The incident took place after a surge of tension between police and supporters.

Already the victim of a jet of smoke, the accused had set off in pursuit of the victim, who had just kicked his car, and had dealt him this blow with a truncheon.

Maxime Beux, 22 years old at the time, will be handcuffed, despite a bleeding wound, and placed in police custody.

His support by the emergency services will only intervene more than an hour later.

Banned from the stadium twice in 2014 and 2017, the man accepted the verdict of the Assize Court, saying that an acquittal would have constituted a "catastrophic scenario" for him.

His lawyer, Me François Fabiani, had welcomed a verdict which recognizes "willful violence with a weapon resulting in permanent disability", as well as "the status of victim" of his client.

The policeman deprived of carrying a weapon

The policeman, a 50-year-old former BAC officer, is now in service in a Reims police station and deprived of carrying a weapon.

He faced 15 years in prison.

At the helm, he had rejected any idea of "intentional violence", believing that he had acted proportionately and obeying orders.
