Where does aggressive behavior come from when one is on the road?

And what about the traffic that causes peaceful people to suddenly freak out?

And why do people unleash their anger while driving?

What advice do you have on how to control one's aggressive behavior?

The reckless and aggressive behavior of some individuals on the road while driving may cause severe consequences for the driver himself and those around him as well.

"Aggressive behavior comes from the fact that there are many who feel wronged on the road, because walking in the street is about giving priority to one's own needs," says traffic psychology expert Bernhard Schlage.

Schlag adds that road traffic, especially while driving, provides a great deal of anonymity, which often feels like one can unleash aggressive behavior without there being any consequences.

So many say that the most aggressive situations that can make them feel is traffic on the roads.

  • What are the signs of aggressive behavior while on the road?

Deliberate aggressive behavior is a form of aggression in which the person who exercises it desires to obtain advantages and to assert his own interests even at the expense of others.

This behavior is intended to harm others.

One feels wronged or does not get his full due, or thinks he must be especially quick at a time when he finds others in his way.

These are all signs of intentional aggressive behavior.

On the other hand, the "epic" battle between motorists and cyclists is "legendary".

Street space is simply limited, while many demand it for themselves.

Often, this struggle over “resources” (street space) causes people to engage in aggressive behavior while on the road.

  • What can be done in order to control aggressive behavior?

Schlag explains that the human body primarily reacts independently to aggressive behavior and gets stressed, so methods that can help relieve stress must be adopted.

In more severe cases, it is possible to simply take a deep breath, or to shout loudly.

On the other hand, it would not be useful to yell at others while waiting for traffic lights.

While this may relieve some of one's stress, it will also put the other person under pressure, which can quickly spiral out of control and potentially lead to physical violence or abuse.

  • How can the emergence of aggressive behavior be prevented permanently?

Schlag explains that there are some preventative measures one can take, including:

  • Listen to calm music before driving to reduce one's desire to always be the fastest or do the right thing.

  • Regardless of whether one is driving a car or a bike, one should always have enough time to reach their destination without having to race or putting pressure on others.

  • One's goal is to drive steadily, rather than trying to exceed the speed limit.

While trying not to get upset when others do it, he feels like he's the only one who sticks to the rules.

  • Another important aspect is that one should not try to get rid of pent-up anger while driving or cycling.

  • One should view those with him on the road as partners, not competitors.
