The reactions of the international scene were expected, since the beginning of the demonstrations in Iran which responded to the death of Mahsa Amini, who died three days after her brutal arrest by the morality police of Tehran.

At the end of September, the European Union had deemed "unjustifiable and unacceptable" the "widespread and disproportionate use of force" against protesters in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who was detained by the police. manners for violation of the dress code which imposes in particular the wearing of the veil for women.

But so far, condemnations from the West have not been followed by action, except in the United States, Canada and Great Britain.

On Monday, the foreign ministers of the European Union therefore adopted sanctions against the morality police and eleven Iranian leaders involved in the repression of these demonstrations.

The term "morals police (...) is not really appropriate when you see the crimes that are committed there," said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Luxembourg, where the heads of the diplomacy of the Twenty-Seven.

The list approved last week

The sanctions list, published in the Official Journal of the European Union, includes 11 Iranian officials, including the Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Issa Zarepour, and four entities, including the vice squad.

They will be subject to a visa ban and an asset freeze by the EU.

The list, which was approved last week by EU ambassadors in Brussels, also includes the head of Iran's vice police, Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi.

The list was drawn up before the fire at Evin prison in Tehran which killed and injured dozens.

Iranian political prisoners as well as foreigners are held in this establishment, including the Franco-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah and the American Siamak Namazi, who are in safety.

“When you see these terrible images of the prison burning, when you see peaceful people, women, men and, increasingly, young people and schoolchildren continuing to be brutally beaten, we cannot not and do not want to turn a blind eye to this situation, ”said Annalena Baerbock.

His Swedish counterpart, Anne Linde, said the sanctions targeted "those responsible for the repression of peaceful protests and especially the murder of several women".
