Jeremy Hunt was appointed Finance Minister by Prime Minister Liz Truss on Friday shortly after former Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng was sacked amid an economic and political crisis, Downing Street announced.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Health, Jeremy Hunt, 55, was a candidate this summer to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, before joining Rishi Sunak against Liz Truss.

Comrade of Boris Johnson and David Cameron at the University of Oxford, Jeremy Hunt, considered uncharismatic, is one of the few personalities to have openly challenged the former Prime Minister during the vote of confidence in June.

In 2019, he lost to Boris Johnson in the leadership election.

Turmoil Budget

In addition to the departure of Kwasi Kwarteng, Downing Street also announced on Friday other movements within the team in charge of Finance, in the hope of reassuring the conservatives and the markets after the turmoil created by its economic policy.

The "mini-budget" announced on September 23, including major spending and tax cuts with unclear financing, had plunged the pound and tormented the debt market.
