The countries of the
European Union
reached a political agreement on Wednesday to approve new sanctions against Iran for the death of
Mahsa Amini
and for the repression against demonstrators who have taken to the streets to protest against his arrest and death
The sanctions, agreed by the ambassadors of the Twenty-seven before the European institutions, will be formally adopted next Monday by the EU
foreign ministers
during their meeting in
Luxembourg
, various community sources explained to Efe, without giving more details about how many people and entities will be included in the list.
Precisely, the president of the
European Commission
,
Ursula von der Leyen
, stated that "it is time to punish those responsible for this repression".
"The brave Iranian women are demanding freedom and equality, values that
Europe
believes in and for which it must speak out,"
von der Leyen
said during a speech at the annual convention of
EU
ambassadors .
The president of the Community Executive added that "violence must stop, women must be able to choose", and added that "this appalling violence cannot go unanswered".
The Twenty-Seven will thus follow the path of other Western countries, such as the
United States
,
the United Kingdom
and
Canada
.
On October 4, during a debate in the plenary session of
the European Parliament
in
Strasbourg
, the high representative of the
EU
for
Foreign Affairs
,
Josep Borrell
, had announced that the community foreign ministers were going to make decisions at their next meeting on new " restrictive measures" against Iran for the "assassination" of
Amini
.
"We will continue to consider all the options at our disposal, including restrictive measures, to deal with the murder of
Masha Amini
and the way in which the security forces have responded to the demonstrations,"
Borrell
said at the time .
A day after his intervention, Iran warned the EU that it will respond to any "hasty" and "little thought out" measures.
Amini
, 22, died on September 16 after being arrested three days earlier by the so-called Morale Police in
Tehran
for considering that she was wearing the Islamic veil wrongly.
