North Korea fires ballistic missile into Sea of Japan

North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Friday morning (local time), South Korea's Yonhap News Agency announced, quoting the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul.

The South Korean military command did not give any further details at first.

North Korea announced that it launched two long-range "strategic" cruise missiles over the Yellow Sea on Wednesday night, as part of a test aimed at "enhancing nuclear capabilities."

The two missiles were launched from the west coast and hovered for about three hours.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed his satisfaction with the "high reaction capabilities of our nuclear combat forces, which have once again demonstrated their full readiness for real war to bring enemies under their control."

He stressed that this experience is "another clear warning to the enemies."

North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests over the past two weeks.

UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range, some of which are capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
