In Spain, citizens do not raise their hands to their hearts when they listen to the anthem and often only wave the flag when the soccer team wins.

However, and despite not being lavish in displays of patriotism, the vast majority say they feel very or quite proud of being Spanish.

Nothing less than

77%

or three out of four, as you prefer.

In this bloc, ideological differences weigh little;

Only the voters of United We Can move away from the majority feeling and, even so, half of them choose to join the group of those who are satisfied with their passport and everything it represents, although

60%

admit that Spain enjoys better rated outside the country than inside.

This is the first conclusion that emerges from the survey prepared by

Sigma Dos for EL MUNDO

on the occasion of the

National Holiday

.

A day that, however,

80%

of Spaniards, ignoring the change of name agreed in

1987

, continues to identify as

Hispanic Day

, a way of celebrating the

discovery of America

and assimilating culture and heritage into the party Common on both sides of the Atlantic.

The PP and Cs voters are the ones who mostly express that pride.

In both cases far exceeding

90%

.

And hot on their heels, Vox and PSOE voters with

89%

and

86%

, respectively.

The supporters of United We Can, with

50%

, are significantly lower and are even surprisingly surpassed -with

57%

who claim to be proud of their Spanishness- by the block of "other parties" in which the voters of independence, nationalist and regionalist forces.

If this general feeling of "pride" is broken down, the respondents, in an assessment ranging from one to 10, give the highest score (

8.6

) to Spanish gastronomy and then point to the culture (

7.9

), the history (

7.4

) and the Constitution (

7

).

Latin Americans residing in our country align with this perception.

Behind them they place the "idea of Spain", the sports teams, the flag, folklore and the anthem.

The last concept that feeds this feeling is the monarchy and, even so, it manages to overcome the approved one.

His note loses steam due to the low score given by the PSOE voters and the very low score given by the voters of United We Can.

For the latter, the idea of Spain, the flag and the anthem are also unworthy when it comes to shaping the pride of being Spanish.

It is a perception contrary to that of the majority who, at

42%

, consider that national symbols should be more present in our daily lives.

30

%

believe that their current presence is sufficient and only

23%

would choose to reduce it.

Especially interesting is the high percentage of those who feel proud that the Spanish language is one of the most widely spoken in the world.

88

%

say so and this assessment mainly brings together the voters of PSOE, PP, Ciudadanos and Vox.

In keeping with this,

82%

are committed to promoting the Spanish culture and language, and this does not seem to be to the detriment of the co-official languages other than Spanish, since

69%

are convinced that the variety of languages, far from weaken, strengthens the Spanish identity.

Focusing on the acts that take place on the occasion of the National Holiday, a large

61%

value well or very well that a military parade is held in the celebration of October 12;

67%

agree

with honoring the discovery of America and

62%

honoring the figure of

Christopher Columbus

.

Latin Americans who live in Spain support these opinions, thus setting aside the movements that have emerged on the other side of the Atlantic interested in drawing a history of black and predatory colonialism.

Again, purple voters are drastically off the majority impression.

The feeling of Spanish pride expressed by a large part of the citizenry is attenuated when those surveyed are urged to confirm whether they would be willing to participate voluntarily in the defense of the country in the event of a military attack.

It is a hypothesis that, evidently, few Spaniards see as plausible, but even so,

44%

respond affirmatively, definitely or probably, compared to

50%

who opt for not firm or probable.

THE NATIONAL MENU: POTATO OMELETTE, HAM AND PAELLA

We Spaniards like good food and, in addition, we are proud of our gastronomic variety.

This is a point on which there are hardly any discrepancies.

Those surveyed even agree when pointing out among the enormous variety of dishes offered by Spanish cuisine those that they consider most represent us.

The potato omelette (it is not specified if it is with onion or not) occupies the first position.

31

%

of those surveyed opt for it.

Ham is in second place, indicated by

29%

, while paella is in third place, chosen by

27%

.

A long way from these culinary stars are croquettes, stew, gazpacho, bean stew and octopus.
